When we speak of the symphony as a musical genre, we usually refer to the formal and aesthetic standards established by Haydn and other Viennese composers during the second half of the 18th century. There were, however, other important centres of musical production, such as the School of Mannheim, the Sturm und Drang movement and the Empfindsamkeit of Northern Germany.
