“Without emotion, there is no memory. Without memory, there is no justice. Without justice, there is no civilisation. Without civilisation, the human race has no future.” These words conclude Jordi Savall’s presentation of his SACD, Armenian Spirit, a frieze of music from one of the oldest of Eastern Christian civilisations – a civilisation that has miraculously survived a troubled and tragic history. Savall has rediscovered this music in the wonderful Thesaurus of Armenian Melodies published in Yerevan in 1982 by the musicologist, Nogosghos Tahmizian.
