About this event

L'Orfeo, with music by Monteverdi on a poem by Alessandro Striggio, was premiered at the court of Mantua on 24 February, 1607, and is considered to be the first opera to be composed. The Ensemble La Fenice celebrate their 25th anniversary by returning to this visionary work of genius composed by Monteverdi on the myth of Orpheus, the poet-musician who charms wild beasts with his music while on his way to the Underworld to rescue his beloved Euridice, the victim of a snake bite.
