The custom of accompanying the voice with a plucked string instrument dates back to the Middle Ages. It was, however, in the last quarter of the 18th. century and the early years of the 19th. that composers in the Iberian Peninsula began to write songs in the spirit of the old tradition of voice accompanied by vihuela de mano.
