R. Schumann: Humoreske, op. 20 / L.V. Beethoven: Variations Diabelli, op. 120

In a letter to his future wife, Clara, Schumann wrote: “I’ve spent the whole week sitting at the piano, composing, writing, laughing and weeping all at once. You’ll find a good description of this in the Humoreske.” Some years earlier, the music publisher Anton Diabelli had commissioned some fifty Austrian composers to write one variation each on a waltz he himself had written. Beethoven surprised him by sending in thirty-three. Piotr Anderszewski is one of the best current performers of these Diabelli Variations, one of the greatest piano works of the Romantic period.
