Chopin: Sonata no. 3 in B minor, Op. 58 / Nocturne in B major, Op.62, no. 1 / Nocturne in E major, Op. 62, no. 2 / Liszt: Sonata in B minor, S. 178
Josep Colom brings this summer’s Festival to a close performing two of the high points of the piano repertoire – the sonatas in B minor by Chopin and Liszt which Colom has recently recorded on disc. Chopin wrote his Third Sonata in 1844 when his relationship with the writer George Sand was going through a difficult period. The work alternates moments in heroic style with other, more lyrical passages. Liszt’s Sonata in B minor is one of the most difficult works in the piano repertoire. It is a dark-hued piece, in four movements that are performed without break. The programme is completed with Chopin’s two Op. 62 Nocturnes.
